Four Types of Experience

THE LITERAL:  Ordinary World / Objective World of the Senses

          Everything is Separate / Reductionism - “You are on a mountain.”

          Classical Physics – cause & effect / Body as Machine

          Dogma Dominates / Societal and Cultural

          Medical War on Disease with focus on Curing

          (conventional medicine and surgery, health food store culture)

                            

THE SYMBOLIC:  Psychic World / Subjective World of Experience

          Everything is Connected

                   “You are part of and interdependent with the mountain”

          Quantum Physics – connection & interdependence / Body as Garden

          Clear Understanding Dominates / Tribal

          Emotions of peace, happiness, love, awe

          Communication with Nature Spirits and Elementals

          (energy medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine,

                   Homeopathy, flower remedies, clairvoyance)

THE MYTHIC:  Dream World / Transpersonal Domain

          Everything is Archetypal -

(EXERCISE: ASSEMBLING A MEDICINE WHEEL MESA)

Walking The Medicine Wheel

        Start with a Wheel you resonate with and MAKE IT YOUR MEDICINE.

          Create a consistent container (e.g. altar, medicine bag or mesa).

          Create a consistent rhythm of practice connected to the natural world

                   (e.g. moon cycle, day of week, solstice, equinox).

          First establish a firm baseline to practice from (what goes where and when FOR YOU).

          Be Flexible!!! Don't be dogmatic. There are always many ways of viewing any situation.

          Approach the wheel with a specific issue and walk through it (a maze can become labrynthian with enough familiarity).

          Every now and then “flip your wheel” and approach things in a completely new and different way.
